Global War on Terrorism Service Medal

Authorized for service members participating in or serving in support of Global War on Terrorism operations on or after Sept.11, 2001, and to a future date to be determined. Initial award of the service medal is limited to airport security operations (from September 27, 2001, until May 31, 2002) and to service members who support Operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle, and Iraqi Freedom. Each combatant commander has the authority to approve award of the service medal for units and personnel deployed to their theater of operations. Special criteria: Must have performed in a designated anti-terrorism operation for a period of either 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days of duty. For those who were engaged in combat, killed, or wounded in the line of the duty the time requirement is waived.
