Frank Brough's Disappointment

Noted Athlete is Refused admission to Marines Because of Fallen Arch

Frank Brough, a son of Dr. and Mrs F. T. Brough, of Court Street, a star High school athlete and former baseball expert with the C. M. S., at present athletic coach at Worcester Tech, has been refused admission to the marines because of a fallen arch. Here is the clipping from the Boston American, telling of the young man's disappointment.

"One of Worchester's best athletes, anxious to fight for Uncle Sam in any way or anywhere, finds the door to such service is barred against him.

"Incidentally, simply as demonstrating the truth of proposition there is never a big loss without some small gain. Worcester's Polytechnic Institute students are congratulating themselves on the fact that they retain one of the best Baseball Coaches Tech has ever had. For Frank Brough, who has been whipping Techs's nine into shape, is the man who can find no place for himself in the United States forces.

"The whole story of how Brough has met with discouragement is known only to his most intimate friends, who say that he feels the disappointment most keenly. It is all because of a slightly fallen arch, which, however, has not prevented Brough from attaining such a state of athletic development that he can do 100 yards in not far from ten seconds.

"He first applied for enrollment for the Plattsburg Training Camp. He was not accepted. Crestfallen, but not discouraged, Brough returned to Worcester and applied for enlistments to the marines. At the local recruiting station he was passed in spite of the defect. The sergeant in charge concluding that he was such a fine specimen in other respects that it would be a shame to lose him.

"Brough was then sent on the district headquarters in Boston and was due to leave for Port Royal, S. C. Before departure, however, he was once more examined and the physicians who made the examination declined to pass him.
