When I (Bob Meli) spoke to Albert Youakim in 2005, he told me he had never graduated from Hackensack upon leaving the High School in April to join the service. While going through yearbooks one day in 2010, I came across Albert Youakim's 1943 yearbook photo. It was probably taken in the fall sometime, and the photo made its way into the yearbook. Albert Youakim told me he received his GED while in the service. -Written by Bob Meli 2011 |
FOUR BROTHERS
ALBERT YOUAKIM DANIEL YOUAKIM PETER YOUAKIM WILLIAM YOUAKIM
NOTE: I was only able to find Peter Youakim's graduation picture. All the other brothers attended Hackensack High School and all served in the Military. Albert told me in a conversation I had with him in 2005 that he got his High School diploma while serving in the Marines because he left High School in the spring to join, the same may have been the case for Daniel and William. ~Bob Meli |
AL YOUAKIM TOURNAMENT IN HIS MEMORY A Volunteer to the United Spinal Association For 61 YEARS Inside is an article that appeared in the paper on November 4, 2007 two months after Al Youakim passed away. The 15 year old boy named Dylan Levine who is mentioned in the article was in my daughters wedding party and walked down the church aisle as the ring bearer. He had been diagnosed with his disease when he was three. He was determined to walk down that aisle and did at the age of four. Not long after that he never walked again. I have not seen Dylan Levine since he moved from our neighborhood one year later when he was only five years old. The impact of what happened to Pete Youakim when he was crippled in that fox hole over sixty years ago and his brother Al's commitment to the disabled is still being felt today. ~Bob Meli Trailblazer for Disabled Article - November 13, 2005 Albert Youakim Wheelchair Sports Article - August 18, 2007 |
